Story Builder Toys
When did you start doing your craft?
The business part officially started in October 2010, but I’ve always enjoyed crafting and had been teaching myself to sew for about a year prior to that.
Who inspired you?
My son Liam, when he was born there were so many recall notices and BPA was suddenly a dangerous thing. I wanted him to have toys that were safe to play with and that he would love, so I made some.
Where do you create? What surroundings get your creative juices flowing?
I create stuffed animals and my husband, Lukas, makes wooden toys. Lately I’ve been getting more into the woodworking side of things and loving every minute of working with the big machines. My creative juices get flowing when I have an empty page and a well sharpened pencil in front of me. I love drawing out my designs before I start working out how to make them. The drawing phase is my favorite part because there are no limitations besides my imagination.
What is your favorite piece to create and why?
Sesonal Plushies, I love coming up with new ones to add to our collection.
What’s your biggest challenge owning an online store?
Promotion, having an online shop in a sea of all the other online shops out there and trying to get noticed by the right people at the right time.
How do you promote your store?
We’re on Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and a new blog where I write about the importance of play for children. We also do local craftshows so I stay pretty busy.
What advice would you give to other Etsy Store owners?
Get a blog, our traffic increased a bunch the month we added ours and it gives your company a voice.
