Comforts From Home – Giving back to Veterans

This fall, Marie Callender’s will launch the Comforts from Home Project by bringing the comforts of home to those who protect America’s homes every day: the brave men and women of the U.S. military.

comforts from home project

This resonates with me on a couple of different levels. Firstly, husband and father in law are both veterans; Thank you to them and to all the US Veterans! Secondly, I love donating especially knowing that the receiving person will use or just simply love it. The last but not least, this project is multifaceted and there’s a show airing on November 11 that features many of my favorite designers and DIY’ers. Oh, and my family loves the chicken pot pies from Marie Callender’s from time to time … that’s real comfort food right there, friends!

The stories that my husband has shared about being overseas during the Iraq war often stear towards getting letters and packages from home. I can totally relate {I love love love getting care packages from Canada and I’m not even a veteran!} But just imagine being on a huge boat on the other side of the world with 5,000 people that you don’t know fighting a war. Receiving something from home is seriously money! The other 5,000 people are all in the same boat {no pun intended} yearning for something from home. A magazine, a chocolate bar, a nice clean smelling pair of shorts … just anything. Anything at all from home, 6 month tours are a long time to be away from the United States … and that’s not the longest tour, some are gone for a year and more. Can’t imagine.

Have you ever watched the videos of the soldiers coming home and their families seeing them for the first time in what seems like forever? Que flood gates! I cannot watch those without balling my face off.
