What do you make/sell on Etsy?
The Nikki, In Stitches Etsy shop is filled with handmade hair accessories, including headbands and hair clips, perfect for all your favorite girls…from your newest little bundles of joy to a mom-on-the-run, there is something for every age and style.
When did you start doing your craft?
Nikki, In Stitches started as a blog, where I could inspire others and encourage others to explore their creativity.When it first started, I had no idea it would grow into a business.My readers really were my inspiration.Their support and their encouragement really gave me the nudge I needed to turn it into something more.It had always kind of been in the back of my mind, but up until that point, I never really gave it serious attention.As my blog grew bigger and bigger, I started to realize I was onto something…that there was potential for more.
I started the Nikki, In Stitches blog in February of 2008. I started selling kits and patterns about a year and a half after that.After so many requests for finished products, I opened my Etsy shop in January of last year.
Who/what inspires you?
I am inspired by color and pattern. That’s usually where my creations start. I know I want to make something of a certain color, or I find a print that I’m totally in love with. Then I site down with my never-ending list of ideas and see what would be a good match. I like putting fresh twists on traditional crafts. Mashing up modern methods and old school techniques is my favorite source for creative ideas.
Where do you create?
HaHa! I create at home, in a teeny tiny little space. I have a closet where I stash all of my supplies, then I cart them to where ever I’m going to actually put them all together. It’s not pretty, but I do love it. Mainly because I get to do it alongside my little ones. We sit down at the table and create together. They have their projects they work on while I work on mine. We talk. We laugh. We sing. It’s kind of magical.
What’s your biggest challenge owning an online store?
I think the biggest challenge is getting your name out there, especially on Etsy where there is so much competition. The other challenge, which I think any handmade seller faces, is keeping miscellaneous costs down. Aside from supplies, things like shipping, shipping supplies, business cards, marketing materials, etc. are things that “nickel and dime” a lot of your profits from you.
How do you promote your store?
Of course, the first answer is through social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. After that, “word of mouth” has been my best sales rep. Happy customers love to talk about their experiences, so I try very hard to make sure everyone that purchases from Nikki, In Stitches is as happy as can be!
What advice would you give to other Etsy store owners?
Network! Join teams, groups, etc. Promote other people’s work, and they will return the favor. Also, take great pictures. So many times I see shops that I think have great product, but their pictures do not do their work justice. Those five little pics are all customers get, and they make a decision to purchase mainly by what they see there…they better be great pics!
